Background of the Study
Social welfare institutions have increasingly become central to addressing the needs of an aging population. In Osogbo, these institutions provide a range of services aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly, including healthcare, social support, and financial assistance (Adewale, 2023). With a growing elderly population facing challenges such as inadequate healthcare facilities, isolation, and economic insecurity, the role of social welfare organizations is more critical than ever. Recent research indicates that community-based elderly care programs contribute significantly to the physical, psychological, and social well-being of older adults (Olasimbo, 2024). These institutions often collaborate with local governments, non-governmental organizations, and volunteer groups to deliver comprehensive care services that are culturally sensitive and accessible. However, challenges including limited funding, infrastructural deficiencies, and a shortage of trained caregivers continue to hinder the effectiveness of these interventions (Femi, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the contributions of social welfare institutions to elderly care in Osogbo by examining service delivery models, beneficiary outcomes, and operational challenges. Through mixed methods research involving surveys, interviews, and case studies, the research will provide a nuanced understanding of how these institutions are meeting the needs of the elderly and identify areas for improvement. The findings will be instrumental in guiding policy reforms and resource allocation to better support the aging population (Ogunyemi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of social welfare institutions in providing care for the elderly, many seniors in Osogbo continue to experience neglect, inadequate healthcare, and social isolation. Financial constraints, limited manpower, and infrastructural challenges often impede the effective delivery of care services (Adisa, 2023). The rapid increase in the elderly population has further strained the capacity of these institutions, resulting in a gap between the services needed and those provided. This discrepancy not only affects the well-being of the elderly but also places additional burdens on families and community resources. The persistent issues in elderly care highlight the need for a thorough evaluation of the contributions of social welfare institutions, with the goal of identifying systemic weaknesses and proposing strategies for improvement (Ibrahim, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by examining the operational efficiency, resource allocation, and service impact of social welfare institutions in Osogbo, ultimately offering recommendations to enhance elderly care services.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the contributions of social welfare institutions to elderly care.
To identify challenges faced in delivering effective elderly care services.
To recommend strategies for improving service delivery and resource allocation.
Research Questions:
How do social welfare institutions contribute to elderly care in Osogbo?
What are the key challenges in delivering effective elderly care services?
What strategies can enhance the quality and reach of elderly care?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Social welfare institutions significantly improve the quality of elderly care in Osogbo.
H2: Inadequate resources and manpower negatively affect the delivery of elderly care services.
H3: Implementing targeted reforms will enhance the effectiveness of elderly care programs.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of social welfare institutions on elderly care in Osogbo, providing insights into the successes and challenges of current care models. The findings will inform policymakers, social workers, and community organizations on strategies to improve service delivery and resource management. Ultimately, the research aims to enhance the quality of life for the elderly, ensuring they receive adequate care and support in a rapidly changing demographic landscape (Olayinka, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the contributions of social welfare institutions to elderly care in Osogbo Local Government Area, Osun State, and does not extend to other forms of elderly care or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Social Welfare Institutions: Organizations that provide social services and support to vulnerable populations, including the elderly.
Elderly Care: The range of services designed to support the health, well-being, and social needs of older adults.
